Talking Points: Aguero versus Kane at The Lane

Will our run of five-successive away wins go on? Here are five things to look out for…

City have won their last five Premier League away matches – a run which stretches back to the April defeat at Old Trafford.

Last time City won five on the road in succession the year was 1912, so there’s an opportunity to break a 103-year old record at White Hart Lane.

However, Spurs may fancy their chances of inflicting successive league defeats on City after West Ham ended our record 11-match winning streak last weekend.

How much will Tuesday night’s win over Sunderland and Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday tell on the outlooks of the respective sides?

There are few teams City have enjoyed facing more in recent years than Spurs.

Our 1-0 win there last season made it eight wins from nine meetings and we’ve scored 16 goals to Tottenham’s two in the last four clashes.

In our last eight league games against Spurs, we’ve netted 27 times which is an average of 3.4 per match.

All the stats are certainly in City’s favour but, aside from a small confidence boost, they won’t count for much come 12.45pm on Saturday.

In Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane, City and Spurs had the two leading scorers in last season’s Premier League but the pair have yet to hit their devastating best form in 2015/16.

Like Aguero, Kane has played well in the opening weeks of the campaign and has contributed fully but the goals have been harder to come by, with the pair just having netted one goal between them in 12 accumulative games – Kun’s goal against Chelsea.

Both are talismanic to their sides, so it may well come down to which one of them can fire when the opportunity presents itself – after all, last season’s tight, cagey encounter was settled by that brilliant breakway goal so clinically finished off by Aguero.

You’d be a fool to underestimate a man with 109 goals and 36 goals from 172 games for City. Kun has also scored 10 goals in seven appearances against Spurs - his highest goal tally against any club in the competition.

Despite topping the table after six games, City cannot say that they have had the rub of the green when it comes to injuries in the early weeks.

City had Pablo Zabaleta, Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala, Gael Clichy, Fabian Delph, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfried Bony missing for a variety of reasons at Sunderland in midweek.

How many of the nine will we get back for our trip to White Hart Lane? We know Pablo, Samir and Vincent are back in contention but will they be fit to start? We’ll find out at around 11.45am on Saturday morning.

One of the best barometers to check one season’s form against the previous campaign’s is to look at the corresponding fixtures and work out where you’ve gained or lost points.

City are performing well on this scale, only dropping points that we took last season against West Ham last time out.

If you look at the previous five matches, we’d already gained a whopping seven points on our tally, meaning we have a net profit of five points at this early stage.
