In the latest of our “We Meet Again” series, we look at the last time we met, a clash City fans will enjoy, one for our visitors and a figure equally revered by both clubs…
The Last Time…
City 1-2 West Ham – 19/09/15
West Ham took a number of scalps on the road in the early weeks of last season and they took another on 19 September 2015, reaping City’s 100% Premier League start in the process.
Victor Moses silenced the Etihad with a long range strike after six minutes before the Hammers hit their hosts on the counter-attack on the half hour mark, with Diafra Sakho slotting in.
Kevin De Bruyne gave the majority inside the stadium hope of a second half turnaround when he struck on the stroke of half-time but after 45 minutes of huff and puff, City couldn’t blow West Ham’s house down and the Irons took the three points back to East London with them.
One to Remember…
City 2-0 West Ham - 11/05/14
We’ve enjoyed some memorable wins over Sunday’s opposition but probably none more-so than the victory which sealed our second Premier League title in three seasons.
City needed to win to pip Liverpool to the title and Samir Nasri got the Blues off to the perfect start when he struck in the first half.
Despite the parallels, there was no “QPR moment” required this time as Vincent Kompany netted in the second half to make sure of a comfortable win and to ensure he’d be raising the Premier League trophy aloft once more by the end of the afternoon.
With West Ham safe from danger, their fans joined in the celebrations, in keeping with the refreshing and rare “special relationship” shared between fans of these two historic clubs.
One to Forget…
City 1-2 West Ham – 20/03/06
Ouch, this one really hurt…
City supporters were dreaming of a rare trip to Wembley when they were paired against the Hammers in the FA Cup quarter final of 2006.
However, two goals from Dean Ashton on either side of a controversial red card for Sun Jihai brandished by Howard Webb did for those aspirations on a miserable night at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Kiki Musampa struck late to briefly give his side hope but West Ham held on and eventually went on to become runners-up in the competition after they were undone in “the Steven Gerrard final”.
One we both Love…
Carlos Tevez
West Ham supporters will never forget the contribution made by Carlos Tevez in their unlikely escape from relegation back in 2008.
Under Alan Curbishley, they won seven of their last nine games with their Argentine ace netting six times, including the winner against newly-crowned champions Manchester United on the final day of the season to ensure survival which had looked unlikely for most of the campaign.
Following a spell at Old Trafford, City pulled off a huge coup in bringing Tevez to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2009 and he soon became an important figure in the recent history of the club, helping City to the FA Cup in 2011 and Champions League qualification for the first time in the same season.
In all, Carlos scored 73 goals in 148 appearances for the Blues between 2009 and 2013.
