Ilkay Gundogan is on target to return to action at the end of the month and is targeting the Manchester derby as a possible City debut.

The German midfielder is recovering from the knee injury he suffered while with Borussia Dortmund but is on schedule to be available in four weeks’ time.

“I’m really looking forward to training normally with the guys and I can’t wait to get going properly -but I just have to be patient for a little while longer,” said Gundogan.

“I’m working hard on my rehab everything is going well so I hope it will be end of August or the beginning of September – of course, it all depends on how things develop over the next few days and weeks.

“Maybe just after the World Cup qualifiers and perhaps the Manchester derby – that would be very nice.”

Gundogan revealed he has been fascinated by the training methods of Pep Guardiola and can’t wait to get going, adding: “I want to help team as soon as I can. I’m curious about the training which looks really interesting and I’ve been in on the video meetings which have been really fun.

“There is a lot to learn, so as I say, I can’t wait to be part of training and the matches but I just need to remain patient.”
