Season so far
Atletico Madrid have been turned into one Europe’s most feared sides under the guidance of Diego Simeone, who took charge at the Vicente Calderon in 2011.
Since then, they have enjoyed exceptional progress. They won the La Liga title in 2014, breaking the Real Madrid-Barcelona duopoly, and were runners up in the Champions League in the same season, beaten by Real in a dramatic final.
They returned to the Champions League final in May but were again beaten by Los Blancos.
Simeone also led them to the Europa League and Super Cup in 2012 and the Copa del Rey in 2013.
This season, however, has seen their La Liga form suffer. They sit fifth in the table, 12 points behind Real Madrid in first place.
In the Champions League, though, they have been superb, finishing ahead of Bayern Munich in Group D, winning five and losing one of their six games.
Previous meetings
The two sides are yet to lock horns in any competition.
City links
City legend Sergio Aguero started his career at Independiente in Argentina before making a move to Atleti in 2006. He quickly became a club legend, scoring over 100 goals and assuming the role as the club’s main marksman after the departure of Fernando Torres to Liverpool.
He moved to the Etihad in 2011 - and in 2012 he scored the crucial goal that sealed City’s first league title in 44 years. He is now joint-fourth on the club’s list of all-time leading goalscorers with 152.
