Season so far
Borussia Dortmund currently lie sixth in the Bundesliga table, a league that has been shaken up by the impressive rise of RB Leipzig, who sit joint-top.
Thomas Tuchel’s side still possess plenty of quality, though, with the likes of Marco Reus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mario Gotze and Shinji Kagawa providing them with genuine attacking threat.
That was in evidence as they progressed from Group F of the Champions League as winners, finishing above Real Madrid in the process. They took 14 points from a possible 18, beating Legia Warsaw away 6-0 and remaining unbeaten in their two games against Real Madrid.
Previous meetings
The two sides have locked horns twice – in the 2012/13 group stage campaign.
Mario Balotelli’s injury-time penalty cancelled out Marco Reus’ opener at the Etihad Stadium, while Julian Schieber bagged the winner in a 1-0 triumph for the Germans at the Westfalenstadion.
City links
Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan joined City this summer after spending five seasons at Dortmund where he forged a reputation as being one of the finest passers in the game.
He helped them to the Bundesliga title in 2012 and the Champions League final in 2013.
