Where and when?
Premier League
City 2-1 Liverpool
Etihad Stadium, 26 December 2003
Report:
City came from behind to claim a crucial win in the Premier League title race.
Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring for the Reds, after Raheem Sterling had collected Luis Suarez’s flick on and rounded Joe Hart, allowing the Brazilian to slot into an empty net.
Skipper Vincent Kompany levelled the score, losing his marker and heading David Silva’s corner home, before the Blues turned the game on its head in first-half stoppage time.
Alvaro Negredo tried his luck with a lofted attempt which Simon Mignolet failed to keep out.
What it meant
The victory ensured City moved to within one point of league leaders Arsenal. The Blues had 38 points – one more than Chelsea and two more than fourth-placed Liverpool.
The Reds would have gone top with a victory, on goal difference.
Highlights
Reaction: Manuel Pellegrini
“It’s important that we showed the personality to come from behind to win the game - it’s not easy when you face such a difficult team, especially when you’re on the counter and you’re losing 1-0, it’s easy to give up space and leave gaps but we played very well.”
