Manchester City midfielder Fernando can’t wait for Gabriel Jesus to join up with Pep Guardiola’s squad in January – but insists his focus right now is on beating Arsenal.

Jesus will become the third Brazilian in City’s first team squad; joining both Fernando and Fernandinho.

Guardiola has already spoken of how he will be prescribing the help of both Brazilians already established at the club in easing the 19-year-old’s adjustment to Manchester life; something Fernando is more than happy to do.

He said: “He is a really young player, but he has outstanding skill: he’s very quick and has great ability. Without any doubt, he’s going to help us a lot. He’s young, he has a lot of room for improvement, but he is an amazing talent.

“As he is such a young player and is leaving Brazil for the first time, we need to be with him. We will talk to him and live as close as possible to him. That’s going to help him a lot to adapt, and when we are here at the club, we will try to help him to settle in as quickly as possible.”

“I’m happy for Guardiola’s words about me. He’s a great manager and when he says such nice things about me, that makes me feel really happy.”

Fernando was speaking ahead of Sunday’s visit of Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium; a match the 29-year-old knows City must win.

“Every game in the Premier League is very important, but when you play against the teams in the top-five, we know these are six-pointers,” he said.

“We are going to have those two games in December against Arsenal and Liverpool; they are direct rivals. Our goal is to win both games so we are able to be top of the league or close to it.”

“Manchester City is a club used to winning, especially at home. We are working hard and we need to be more focused to be able to start winning again.”

Having not beaten Arsenal since the 6-3 thriller in December 2013, City will be gunning for victory in Sunday’s heavyweight clash in order to leapfrog their opponents and maintain pressure on Chelsea.

“We are sad about those statistics. We hope we can break that during the game on Sunday. Let’s hope we put in a good performance and get the win to put us as close to the top of the league as possible,” said Fernando.

“Arsenal are a team that play really well, not only the midfield, but across the whole team. They’re a very powerful team; we are aware of their quality.”
