The German, who had been in fine form before his setback, took to Twitter this afternoon to confirm the operation had gone well and thank the City supporters for their kind words in the aftermath of his injury.
He said: “Hi guys! I’m doing well and today’s surgery went fine. Now it’s another road to recovery.”
Gundogan became the first signing of the Pep Guardiola era when he joined City in the summer from Borussia Dortmund – but he had to wait until mid-September before making his debut after recovering from a previous injury sustained in Germany.
He was awarded the man of the match in his first game - the 4-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach - and had been a regular in Guardiola’s first team ever since, producing a string of fine displays.
Everyone at Manchester City wishes Ilkay the best in his recovery and we hope to see him back in action as soon as possible.
We will keep you updated with his progress.
