Taking a look back to see what happened on this day in City history...

1955

The first game we look at in this feature is the resounding 5-0 away win against Manchester United at Old Trafford that took place on this day 61 years ago.

The result left City fourth in the table and only two points off leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers. Paddy Fagan and Joe Hayes grabbed two goals each with Johnny Hart rounding off the scoring.

1977

Moving on, we look at a narrow 1-0 win against Arsenal that took place on this day in 1977. A Joe Royle strike ensured the 45,368 faithful City supporters left Maine Road in high spirits.

The win proved to be important but ultimately not enough as Liverpool pipped City to the title by just one point .

2006

Manchester City beat Charlton Athletic 3-2 in the Premier League on this day in 2006. Richard Dunne scored a rare goal as City took an early lead. The strike was Dunne’s fourth goal for City in 203 appearances.

Goals from Darren Bent and Marcus Bent put Charlton into a 2-1 lead but new boy Georgios Samaras and Joey Barton both scored to ensure the three points for the Blues.

2012

On this day in 2012, City moved back to the summit of the table after beating Aston Villa 1-0 away at Villa Park. City had not won a game on the road in six and the three points were welcomed with open arms.

Joleon Lescott nodded home in the 63rd minute with a hook shot that was enough to see the game out. City went on to win the league with Sergio Aguero grabbing that famous last-gasp strike against Queens Park Rangers.
