Manuel Pellegrini is proud of the way his team saw off Norwich City in the FA Cup third round even after he rested a number of key players for the clash.

The Blues weren’t affected by the absence of David Silva, Fernandinho and Yaya Toure as they ran out 3-0 victors at Carrow Road.

Goals from Sergio Aguero, Kelechi Iheanacho and Kevin De Bruyne sealed the win but it was the strength in depth of the squad that most impressed Pellegrini.

The Chilean said: “It was a very good performance against a difficult team at their own stadium where they are in a good moment. I think that from the beginning we were a very aggressive team and we came for the win.”

He continued: “One of the merits of this squad is to be involved in so many competitions even with the injuries that we have to important players.

“That’s why when you have the option, as Kelechi had today, I think it’s very important to demonstrate why they are in this squad. All the players are involved mentally and physically and they know that they are important if we want to continue playing in all competitions.”

City took control of the tie with a superb goal from Sergio Aguero and Pellegrini is excited by the Argentinian’s return to form and fitness.

He said: “When Sergio starts playing more games, he always improves his performance. He scored a beautiful goal and I’m sure that every game he plays he will perform because we know that he is a top player.”

The manager insisted the Blues remain motivated and they have already set their sights on the Premier League fixtures against Everton and Crystal Palace next week.

He said: “It’s very important to be focused game by game, we’ve played in the FA Cup and now we must return to the Premier League. We have to play two games at home and it’s very important that we try to reduce the gap that we have with Arsenal.

“We have so many games to play in January that it is important to have the whole squad fit but for the moment, we chose this team, they played very well and now we must choose which is the best team to start against Everton.”
