Manchester had been eagerly awaiting this Derby after the semi-final draw took place in December 2009.
The two sides had already met once that season with United coming out on top in seven-goal thriller after Michael Owen scored the winner in added time.
United took an early lead through Ryan Giggs in the 19th minute when the Welshman prodded home from close range after Shay Given saved from Wayne Rooney.
They remained in the lead until shortly before half time when referee Mike Dean awarded City a penalty after Craig Bellamy was fouled by Rafael in the box. Carlos Tevez stepped up to take the spot kick and smashed the ball down the middle to level the scores.
City’s number 32 notched his second of the game against his former team in the 65th minute as he headed past Edwin van der Sar from a few yards out to give the Blues the lead.
Substitute Owen had a chance to equalise late in the game but couldn’t find a way past Nedum Onuoha on the line and City took a narrow lead to Old Trafford.
