Yesterday we started our countdown of the five best nights at the Etihad with the Aston Villa win in 2014, but what is next on our list?

City 2-1 Manchester United, 19 January 2010

Manchester had been eagerly awaiting this Derby after the semi-final draw took place in December 2009.

The two sides had already met once that season with United coming out on top in seven-goal thriller after Michael Owen scored the winner in added time.

United took an early lead through Ryan Giggs in the 19th minute when the Welshman prodded home from close range after Shay Given saved from Wayne Rooney.

They remained in the lead until shortly before half time when referee Mike Dean awarded City a penalty after Craig Bellamy was fouled by Rafael in the box. Carlos Tevez stepped up to take the spot kick and smashed the ball down the middle to level the scores.

City’s number 32 notched his second of the game against his former team in the 65th minute as he headed past Edwin van der Sar from a few yards out to give the Blues the lead.

Substitute Owen had a chance to equalise late in the game but couldn’t find a way past Nedum Onuoha on the line and City took a narrow lead to Old Trafford.

Reaction

“Passion, intensity, vehemence, rapture, pick your adjective, this Manchester derby had the lot.

“City will go into the Old Trafford leg with the numerical and perhaps psychological advantage after a Carlos Tevez double inched their noses in front in the search for the winning post.

“Make no mistake the second meeting has every chance to be the same kind of thunderous, thoroughbred classic full of flair and flares that this game proved to be.” Chris Bailey, Manchester City

“The noisy neighbours just got a whole lot louder – and their chants will have been ringing in Sir Alex Ferguson’s ears long after United were silenced at the City of Manchester Stadium.

“This Carling Cup semi-final is far from over – but on a night when Ferguson laid his cards on the table, it was pair of aces from Carlos Tevez that gave Roberto Mancini the bragging rights, at least until next week’s second leg.” Manchester Evening News

“The match, all the same, held other stories that the victors will rejoice in retelling. They had, after all, come back from a goal down to attain this joy. It is much too soon to tell whether City have been transformed but Tevez is certainly in the midst of an astonishing spell.” Kevin McCarra, Guardian

The noisy neighbours just got louder. With the Eastlands atmosphere crackling like an electrical storm, Carlos Tévez decided to pump up the volume, responding to the toxic taunts of those who once adored him with two nerveless, priceless goals. Some player. Some occasion.” Henry Winter, Telegraph
