As we continue our countdown of the five best nights at the Etihad, here is an unforgettable evening from not so long ago...

City 3-2 Bayern Munich, 25 November 2014

Aguero

City’s Champions League hopes had looked down and out with no wins from the opening four matches played.

It was going to take something special to beat the group leaders who arrived at the Etihad knowing they had already qualified for the Round of 16 after winning all four of their matches.

With CSKA taking points off Roma, a win would leave Manuel Pellegrini’s side knowing a victory in Rome should be enough to salvage qualification.

Sergio Aguero’s 21st-minute penalty gave City the lead, but when Munich struck twice in the final five minutes of the first half, the task looked a whole lot harder.

Nobody was quite expecting the Blues to progress with 85 minutes played and the score still 2-1 to the Germans. Nobody, perhaps, except Kun Aguero...

Man of the Match

Sergio Aguero

Reaction

“But the Germans turned the game on its head before half-time through Xabi Alonso’s free-kick and a Robert Lewandowski header.
And that was how it stood until a stirring finish that evoked memories of that famous day in May 2012 when Aguero snatched glorious triumph from despair and won the Premier League title in the dying seconds against QPR.”

Phil McNulty, BBC Sport

“The truly astonishing thing about what happened here in that wild, breathless finale is that, ignoring for one moment the extraordinary five-minute spell when Manchester City shocked maybe even themselves, it had been another night to expose their shortcomings in Europe. They had been out-passed, out-thought and frequently humbled by a Bayern side that were down to 10 men after 20 minutes and Manuel Pellegrini would have faced some difficult questions but for what happened next.”

Daniel Taylor, The Guardian
