City took the lead against Borussia Dortmund through Sergio Aguero but a last-minute equaliser from Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic meant the International Champions Cup tie would be decided on penalties.
This gave Gunn his chance to shine and the 20-year-old goalkeeper didn’t disappoint, making three saves to seal City’s first win of their pre-season preparations.
Speaking after the match in Shenzhen, he said: “Most of the lads put away their penalties pretty well but their goalkeeper saved a few. It was going down to the wire but I managed to save the last one and it was a great moment.
“It’s been difficult this week with the cancellation of the last game but we’ve had to adapt and I thought we did that quite well today against an unbelievable Dortmund side.”
Gunn feels that City are now on their way to being ready for the return of the Premier League after a host of stars including Aguero, David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi made their first appearance for City under Pep Guardiola.
“Every year there is a tournament so we have players coming back late. It’s going to be difficult for them to integrate back in but I think they did that well in the last week and hopefully they can do that more and more ahead of the season,” said Gunn.
“There’s things that he [Guardiola] wants from everyone but that’s something we’ll keep in the changing room and I think we can still improve as a team going into the season.”
