The Albiceleste, without a major international title since 1993, take on holders Chile in a re-run of last summer’s final in Santa Clare, California.
It marks the second meeting between these sides since that fateful meeting in Santiago in 2015 which was settled on penalties.
Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Otamendi make up the City contingent in Gerardo Martino’s squad and both will be hoping to feature in this Group D opener.
Lionel Messi is an injury doubt for Argentina after he sustained an injury to his back in the friendly win over Honduras last week.
It remains to be seen whether he will be fit enough to come back into the line-up but Aguero will be pleased to have his great friend (and roommate) back in the ranks and on the training field alongside him.
A decision will be taken on the Barcelona forward’s fitness in the hours leading to the match.
Argentina have won their last four matches going into this special Copa America which marks a century of the South American championships.
For the first time ever, Northern American teams have been invited to take part in the tournament which is staged in the United States.
Although the defeat to Chile in the last incarnation of the tournament is unquestionably in the backdrop of this clash between two of the continent’s elite, Argentina boss Martino has rubbished talk of this being any kind of revenge mission because the teams have already met in World Cup qualifying.
On that occasion, the Albiceleste triumphed 2-1 back in March.
Martino told journalists: “We were asked if it was a rematch when we played in the qualifiers.
“The final of the Copa America was a year ago. Chile won on penalties.
“Not even a final would give us an opportunity for revenge. It would just give us a new opportunity.”
Kick-off at the Levi’s Stadium is at 3am (UK time).
We’ll let you know how Nicolas and Sergio get on here on mcfc.co.uk on Tuesday morning.
