It was a tense day in France today and especially for the French national team who saw themselves in a war against the mighty Irish.
With only minutes into the game, every French citizen in nation had their heart in their sleeves as Ireland took an early lead. Shane Long was tripped in the box by a trailing Paul Pogba, seconds after kick-off… Step up, Robbie Brady. A cleanly converted penalty set off a raucous of noise from the Irish as it looked like an upset was on the cards.
For much of the first half, it was France who looked to get one back as they produced attack after attack, but the Irish were able to hold on and send the game into half-time with the green, white and orange tri-colour holding the advantage!
It was much of the same in the second half until City man Bacary Sagna whipped in a vicious cross that found Antoine Griezmann who converted to make things 1-1 after 58 minutes… Three minutes later it was Griezmann again finding the back of the net for France as the home side got themselves back into lead. They were then able to hold on from there.
The French now head into the quarter final of the tournament looking to play the winner of England and Iceland.
