Ilkay Gundogan marked his first start for Germany in a year with an assist, as three City players were in international action on Friday night.

The midfielder created the opener for Joachim Löw’s men in their 8-0 thrashing of San Marino, whilst John Stones and Raheem Sterling featured for England in the Three Lions’ 3-0 triumph against Scotland.

It took just six minutes for Gundogan to stamp his authority on the game in San Marino, as he set up Sami Khedira to round the goalkeeper, with a beautifully chipped ball over the hosts’ defence.

A hat-trick from Serge Gnabry, a Jonas Hector brace, a Mattia Stefanelli own goal and a Kevin Volland strike would follow, maintaining the World Cup holders’ 100% record in Group C.

At Wembley, Stones and Sterling also completed 90 minutes for England.

Former Blue Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring with a header on 24 minutes, in the first of a trio of headers, as Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill also netted.

Stones produced an excellent, goal-thwarting block at 1-0 – moments before Lallana’s effort – while Sterling had chances to add his name to the scoresheet.

England remain unbeaten in Group F, with three wins from four.
