Two goals each from Sergio Aguero and Gundogan himself saw City return to the top of the Premier League with a 4-0 victory over the Baggies.
That ended a run of six games without a win for City and although Gundogan was happy to return to the Premier League summit, he insisted the performance was the most pleasing aspect of the afternoon.
He said: “It was very important to win and we played great, especially in the first half. We deserved it very much and we’re very happy that we were able to win again.
“At the moment it’s a nice feeling to be top of the table but the season is very long so that’s not the main thing right now.
“It was important to improve our game again and not to do the mistakes we did in the last few weeks. Today was a good start and we will have to keep doing in the next few matches.”
It was an exceptional afternoon all round for the German, who scored City’s third and fourth goals with emphatic finishes towards the end of the match.
That takes Gundogan’s tally to three goals in a City shirt after he scored in City’s emphatic victory over Bournemouth in September.
He said: “I’m very happy to score. In the last few weeks and months I haven’t scored too much so it’s always special for me to score. Today I scored twice and I’m very happy about that but the most important thing was the win.
Finally, Gundogan was also delighted for Sergio Aguero, who scored his first goals since the 3-1 victory over Swansea City.
“He’s a player who needs confidence for his game. You could see it in the last few training sessions that he has got it back and he did it very well today. He ran a lot, worked very hard and he’s very important for us,” said Gundogan.
