Those extreme measures may not be necessary, however, as the Catalan has revealed how he sees his long-term future panning out.
Guardiola, in the second part of his pre-Spurs press conference, told journalists that he’ll stay at the Etihad Stadium for as long as he, the chairman and the fans are happy and for as long as he feels he can improve the players in his squad.
“I’m so happy here – I’m not thinking it will just be three years,” Guardiola said. “Every time I’ve decided to leave a club, to say goodbye to Barcelona, to Bayern Munich, it’s in the last year I decide, when I say ‘OK, that’s enough’
“Maybe I can stay longer or maybe less – I don’t know what’s going to happen, it depends on the results, whether the chairman is happy with me or with our job, always that can happen.
“If they’re happy with me and I’m happy, why not longer? It depends if the success is there and if I have the hunger or the chance to improve the squad isn’t there anymore. I never want to be a problem with the club. If I feel I don’t have the energy – me, Pep, without energy, is not good.
“It’s all about whether the fans are happy watching our games. When I feel that’s not going to happen, I will not stay.
“In my third year here our game will be much, much better than it is now. Most of our wins so far we’ve won with our enthusiasm – a new coach, we are new, and you win a lot of games that way.
“To create something stable, more control, you need time. My first season at Barcelona we won so many titles but believe me, we were better in the fourth year.
“In terms of the way we play, we will be better in my third year, I’m absolutely sure.”
City’s perfect start to the season ended in Glasgow with that 3-3 draw with Celtic in midweek but their 100% Premier League record is still intact.
However, Guardiola’s men go up against second place Spurs on Sunday for what looks like being their toughest assignment of the season so far.
The 45-year old considers Tottenham, along with Liverpool, as one of the two most impressive teams he’s seen in 2016/17 so far and touched on the draw on Wednesday night.
Pep said: “After six games what I saw of Tottenham, with Liverpool, they are one of the best teams in the Premier League in this moment. We need a good performance to get anything – if we are so-so? No chance.
“Maybe the fans were not happy that we didn’t win [v Celtic] but they were happy that we tried to the last minute to try to win.
“The players after the game were so exhausted that they couldn’t talk and that is what I want. I want our fans to know that. I cannot be disappointed in our performance in Glasgow. There were mistakes of course but maybe in some games we won we made more mistakes.
“In the last 25 games in their stadium, Celtic lost just three – that shows how tough it is. We have to analyse our performance in those terms. That’s why I’m satisfied.”
