Raheem Sterling said Manchester City were thinking only about points rather than records after the winger's goal secured a vital 1-0 win at Newcastle United.

Sterling‘s 30th minute strike made it 18 successive Premier League wins for Pep Guardiola‘s side and helped the Blues go 15 points clear at the top of the table.

The latest victory also moved City to within one win of equaling Bayern Munich’s all-time record of 19 straight league triumphs.

But Raheem insisted City’s sole focus was on performance and consistency rather than securing a place in the record books.

“I don’t think anyone is really thinking about records,” said Raheem.

“They’re nice to have on your CV but we have to keep winning and getting three points.

“Records only stand for a certain amount of time. Three points add to the table.”

City produced another dominant display but couldn’t add to Raheem’s strike and Newcastle mounted a furious late onslaught to make for a nervy finale.

And Sterling paid tribute to City’s ability to dig deep when it mattered most.

“There were most definitely some anxious moments,” Raheem added.

“They soaked up the pressure really well and they were on the counter-attack.

“We gave away some silly free-kicks to put pressure on ourselves but our team spirit showed.

“We dug deep, dug in and got the win.”

Sterling’s 13th league goal of the season – and his 17th in all competitions – came from another sublime pass from assist king Kevin De Bruyne

And the England winger said he and his strike colleagues were blessed to have so many superb creative players within the club’s ranks.

“It’s really good,” Raheem added.

“There are quite a few players in the team who can find a pass - Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, David Silva...

“Nine times out of ten, they will find you. It was a great team goal and a great pass from Kevin.”
