Skipper Vincent Kompany may have endured an injury-disrupted 2016/17 campaign but his calming and commanding influence from April onward was clear for all to see.

In his run of nine Premier League games at the end of the season City lost just once - away at Chelsea - as the Blues secured third place and direct qualification to the Champions League group stages.

Kompany added three goals in that time, including a potentially vital strike to break Southampton’s resistance at St Mary’s, plus his Nissan Goal of the Season against Crystal Palace. Just six goals were conceded by City in the Premier League in that spell.

The late goal flurry might have been a slight surprise - as the man himself admits - but the defensive contribution is merely further evidence of the Belgian’s supreme qualities at centre-back.
