Vincent Kompany says the win over Watford on the final day of the season was a glimpse into the near future.

The Blues turned in one of the best displays of the season as the Hornets were brushed aside 5-0 at Vicarage Road and the skipper believes it is a standard that needs to be repeated regularly next term in order to win trophies.

“We showed so many signs of things we have wanted to achieve this season in our final game against Watford,” said Kompany.

“We finished the season strongly and now we must make sure we take that form into next season and hit that benchmark week in, week out.”

The captain ended the campaign on a personal high, playing the last eight matches in succession and scoring three goals in the process after suffering several set-backs earlier in the campaign.

“I enjoy nothing better than being out on the pitch wearing the sky blue shirt but I’m particularly pleased at the way we finished the season and made sure we did what was needed,” he said.

“As for my goals, you know what? I’m getting a taste for them now! I might want a couple more next season! Sometimes it’s all about desire, especially at a set-piece and I had a feeling I’d score against Watford so it was nice, but you can never predict those things.

“It was more important to get an early advantage. If you play the way we play with a lot of pressing, high energy and intensity, it makes a big difference if we can get our noses in front early on and maybe get two or three before the break.

“Once we establish that kind of advantage, the dynamics of the game change and everything is completely different.

“We lost once in our final 17 Premier League games and it was important to gain direct passage to the Champions League group stages by finishing third.

“When you recognise it’s not been a perfect season, the last thing you want to do is compromise the next season – now everything is set-up nicely for all the good things that can happen in football and on this occasion, it was job done.

“We can now look forward to the next campaign and being back in contention in four competitions.”
