The teams went in at the break goalless, though both sides had reason to feel disappointed they’d not broken the deadlock.
The second-half was again evenly contested with Gundogan neat and tidy in possession and Sane lively and inventive while Stones was steady and cool in possession.
Kyle Walker replaced Kieran Trippier on 71 minutes to bring the number of City players on the pitch to four, but though both sides had half chances, it was Sane’s woodwork strike that remained the nearest to breaking the deadlock.
Both City’s German stars were substituted on 86 minutes after a pleasing night’s work and Stones enhanced his international credentials yet further against the world champions with a faultless display.
Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard almost scored a last-gasp winner for the Three Lions with the last kick of the game, but overall, a draw was a fair result.
Elsewhere, Kevin De Bruyne played the first half of Belgium’s friendly with Mexico before subbed at the break by Napoli’s Dries Martens.
