Leroy Sane came within a whisker of scoring the winner for Germany who were held 0-0 by England at Wembley.

The City winger thundered a shot against the bar in front of a sell-out Wembley crowd.

tI was the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock in a useful workout for both sides. who are both headed to next summer’s World Cup finals in Russia.

John Stones started for England while Kyle Walker began on the bench as England took on a Germany side that included Sane and Ilkay Gundogan in its starting XI.

In an entertaining first-half, all the City contingent more than held their own with Gundogan steady in the middle and Stones solid and confident at the back, carrying his Club confidence to international level.

But it was Sane who had the stellar moments in the opening period, firing wide from the left early on before going close twice in two minutes midway through the first half as he curled a 20-yard shot onto the crossbar with Jordan Pickford beaten on 21 minutes, and then when he saw a shot headed off the line by Phil Jones with Pickford again beaten two minutes later..

The teams went in at the break goalless, though both sides had reason to feel disappointed they’d not broken the deadlock.

The second-half was again evenly contested with Gundogan neat and tidy in possession and Sane lively and inventive while Stones was steady and cool in possession.

Kyle Walker replaced Kieran Trippier on 71 minutes to bring the number of City players on the pitch to four, but though both sides had half chances, it was Sane’s woodwork strike that remained the nearest to breaking the deadlock.

Both City’s German stars were substituted on 86 minutes after a pleasing night’s work and Stones enhanced his international credentials yet further against the world champions with a faultless display.

Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard almost scored a last-gasp winner for the Three Lions with the last kick of the game, but overall, a draw was a fair result.

Elsewhere, Kevin De Bruyne played the first half of Belgium’s friendly with Mexico before subbed at the break by Napoli’s Dries Martens.

In a seesaw game, the Red Devils’ run of six consecutive wins came to an end with a 3-3 draw against the Mexicans in Brussels with Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku (2) on target for the hosts.

Bernardo Silva won his 21st cap for Portugal against Saudi Arabia in Viseu. 

Silva was replaced on  56 minutes with the Portuguese 2-0 up..
