Pep Guardiola has hailed Fernandinho as perhaps the best holding midfielder in the world.

The Brazilian, who is poised for his 200th City appearance against Leicester, has been pivotal in the Blues’ barnstorming run this season, shoring up the midfield with some superb displays this campaign.

The holding role is one that often goes unnoticed, but not by Guardiola who says the Blues are lucky to have him.

“Fernandinho always plays with us - he is so important,” said the City boss.

“He can play in 10 positions. Last season he played full-back many times. It’s important to create a good team with good guys and he is one of them.

“He is a fundamental player for us and I am happy to have him.”

Asked whether he thought Ferna was the best player in his position in the world, the Catalan replied: “Yes, right now there’s no doubt about that, one of the best.”

Ferna’s season stats to date certainly back up his manager’s claims…
