Ilkay Gundogan believes Napoli are one of the dark horses of this season’s Champions League.

The Serie A leaders won their eighth game in a row against Roma at the weekend to maintain their 100% start in the league this season.

Having lost their opening Group F game against Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli beat Feyenoord to get their European campaign back on track and arrive at the Etihad brimming with confidence and Gundogan sees the Italians as a major threat.

“I’ve not seen that much of Napoli this season, to be honest, but over the past few years they’ve been very strong and play beautiful football and I know they’ve made a fantastic start,” said Gundogan.

“I think they play a similar style to us in that they’re technical, play a lot of short, quick passes and have players in the middle who excel at that type of football.

“They have strikers who regularly score a lot of goals and they have huge quality. For me, in European football, Napoli are one of the teams that are maybe the most underrated because they can beat anyone on their day. They are very dangerous and they could surprise a lot of people.”

Gundogan gave a brief cameo at the weekend as City thrashed Stoke at the Etihad to move two points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The Blues have now won nine games on the bounce in all competitions but the German midfielder is urging everyone to enjoy the moment, but keep their feet on the ground.

“I believe we are the strongest team in the group, but there is always the danger that people can maybe get carried away a little,” he said,

“Shakhtar, Napoli and Feyenoord may not be considered the biggest names in European football, but in my opinion, these sort of teams are a threat and Donetsk showed how good they are – in our own stadium – and for me, Napoli are a better team that Donetsk, so we must be careful.”
