City’s gate of 50,755 against Wolves was the highest League Cup crowd at the Etihad Stadium and the Club’s best in the competition for 42 years.

The Blues have had a long affinity with the League Cup, currently named the Carabao Cup, with two successes in recent years.

The Blues lifted the trophy in 2014 with a 3-1 win over Sunderland and in 2016 with a penalty shoot-out victory over Liverpool and the possibility of a third final in a decade is on the horizon after Tuesday’s penalty shoot-out win over Wolves.

City enjoyed three League Cup finals in the 1970s, lifting the trophy in 1970 against West Brom and 1976 against Newcastle – the only Wembley final loss in the League Cup was in 1974 against Wolves.

Bravo the hero in penalties win

The crowd against Wolves topped the 50,182 against Manchester United in 1975 by 573 fans, but the record of 55,799 set in 1969 will be harder to top due to the current Etihad capacity and segregation policy.

The previous League Cup high at the Etihad was set in 2016, when 50,048 attended the semi-final second leg against Everton.

Competitive pricing and increased visitor allocation has also made the Carabao Cup an attractive midweek proposition for families.

The draw for the Carabao Cup quarter final will be made by Question of Sport presenters Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell on Thursday, 26 October at 4pm and ties will be played on the week beginning 18 December.
