City have marked BBC commentator John Motson’s final visit to the Etihad with a branded sheepskin coat.
The Match of the Day stalwart is calling time on his career after 50 years of sterling service behind the microphone.
‘Motty’, who once described the 5-2 win over Spurs at Maine Road in October 1994 as one of the best games he’d ever witnessed, was presented with the coat prior to City’s home game with Burnley – his last match covering the Blues on their own soil.
The sheepskin coat became synonymous with Motson during his career, with a live broadcast during a blizzard one of the enduring images of British televised football.
Now, in his final season, the Club wished to mark his last City game with a new version of his iconic coat, presented by Bernard Halford and Mike Summerbee.
“It will be strange watching Match of the Day and not hearing John’s voice,” said Summerbee.
“He’s part of football folklore in England and it’s a measure of his longevity that he commentated while I was playing!
“We, as a Club, wanted to mark his last commentary game at the Etihad and I’m sure when we next have a blizzard, he’ll put it on and think of City!”
Though he isn’t retiring until the end of the season, everyone at Manchester City wishes Motty the very best for the future.
