John Stones has praised Ederson’s character after the Brazilian returned to training just two days after suffering a nasty head injury in the win over Liverpool.

The City goalkeeper was involved in a heavy collision with Sadio Mane on Saturday that left him needing stitches in a head wound.

But he trained on Monday and Tuesday wearing protective headwear and has travelled to Rotterdam ahead of the game against Feyenoord, with Pep Guardiola confirming he is in contention to start the game.

“Ederson has got on with it straight away,” Stones said. “After the game in the changing room he was talking as if nothing had happened.

“That shows his character. He wants to be around the team, in that environment. I’ve not asked him much because everyone will have been.

“Everyone has seen his face, the stitches, the swelling - but he’s put a scrum cap on and he’s training today.”

Stones also welcomed the strength in depth in the City squad this season.

Guardiola brought in five new faces this summer, creating strong competition for places in every department.

And Stones, 23, says only by being at his best in every training session can he expect to play regularly in the first team and keep his place in the England setup.

“I have to keep fighting, keep working hard in training,” he said.

“There is strong competition, everyone wants to play.

“We have to play well to keep our spot and keep in the England squad.”
