With Manchester City unbeaten in the Premier League so far this season, they now begin their 2017/18 Champions League campaign with a trip to Feyenoord on Wednesday.

Club journalist Rob Pollard has taken a closer look at the game...

Ederson

Remarkably, Brazilian goalkeeper win over Liverpool at the weekend.

He has trained this week wearing protective headwear and it says much about his attitude and character that he wants to be involved so soon after colliding with Sadio Mane.

It got somewhat lost in the aftermath of Saturday’s game but Ederson had looked absolutely superb before going off to receive treatment. Brave, agile and capable of making show-stopping saves, his distribution also looked exceptional.

Claudio Bravo is waiting in the wings to play, but Ederson will be desperate to build on the start he’s made at City, which has left most people believing he could be a top goalkeeper for years to come.

Aguero chasing records

Saturday’s opening goal was Sergio Aguero’s 124th in the Premier League and he is now the highest non-European goalscorer in the competition’s history.

It also saw him edge closer to Eric Brook’s record of 177 City goals. Aguero is now just six short of Brook’s total and could soon become the highest goalscorer in the Club’s history.

Can he add to his tally on Wednesday evening and chip away at Brook’s lead?

Surely, it’s only a matter of time before there’s a new name at the top of City’s all-time leading scorer list.

Two in-form teams

City’s 5-0 win over Liverpool – the first time they had put five past the Merseysiders since 1937– made it 12 games unbeaten stretching back into last season.

They’ve taken 10 points from a possible 12 from this season’s Premier League without really hitting top form and are many people’s favourites for the title.

It seems Guardiola has made City hard to beat and continuing the unbeaten record will be high on his agenda when his team step out at the De Kuip in Rotterdam on Wednesday.

But Feyenoord have started well, too. They lead the Eredivisie, with four wins from four games, and appear to be buoyed by their glorious title win in May, their first since 1999.

It’s certainly a match between two in-form sides.

A first competitive game

This is the first time these two sides have met in a competitive fixture.

City hosted Feyenoord ahead of the 1994/95 season in a friendly at Maine Road, which saw Brian Horton’s Blues go down 4-2.

And they met again prior to the 2004/05 season in Rotterdam, with City coming out on top in a 2-1 victory.

But this is a historic occasion. A competitive European game between these two is uncharted territory.
