City stepped out for a testing assignment at Wembley after a tough week which had seen us exit the Champions League quarter-finals to Liverpool and lose the Etihad derby 3-2 to Manchester United.
However, City responded in superb fashion against Spurs with Gabriel Jesus and and an Ilkay Gundogan penalty opening up a 2-0 lead. And though Christian Eriksen narrowed the deficit late in the first-half, a strike from Raheem Sterling midway through the second-half sealed the victory.
And following what has been a demanding fortnight both physically and mentally, De Bruyne said the Wembley win spoke volumes as to City’s collective character.
“Everybody feels a bit of tiredness – it has been a tough two weeks. We had five big games and you feel it,” Kevin reflected.
“But the mental toughness of this team is unbelievable.
“I think against the games against United and Liverpool at home were good. I think we deserved to win those games but it didn’t happen.
“Sometimes that’s football and the teams we played were very strong.
“Today we scored the goals and defended better and I think we deserved to win.”
The result means that City need just three more points to clinch the Premier League title... assuming that second-placed United don’t lose at home to West Brom tomorrow or away at Bournemouth in midweek.
However, the Belgian midfielder said that there would be no let-up in focus or concentration from the Blues.
“We know we are not there yet,” KDB added. “We knew that we had to win two out of six games which isn’t bad odds for us.
“Now it’s one out of the remaining five and we just have to do our thing and hopefully we can finish it soon.”
