Fabian Delph says he is fit and ready to challenge for a place in the Manchester City side after recovering from injury.

The 28-year-old hasn’t played since coming off after half an hour of the defeat to Liverpool in January, having turned his knee in a challenge with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and leaving Anfield on crutches.

But as City prepare to face Basel in the first leg of our Champions League last-16 tie, Delph believes he will come back from his latest setback stronger than ever.

“Injuries are part and parcel of being a footballer,” he said. “You have good points and low points.

“I’m quite fortunate, if you want to call it that, because I’ve had worse injuries and a lot of niggly injuries throughout my career, so for me it wasn’t a massive deal.

“I’ve come back stronger. I can say I’ve come back stronger after every injury I’ve had, and I can see the same thing happening when I’m back.

“I’m now training, fit and healthy, and raring to go again.”

City’s phenomenal season continued with a superb 5-1 win over Leicester on Saturday.

It means we are now 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League table with 11 matches still to play, with our involvement in the three cup competitions also continuing and an unprecedented quadruple still a possibility.

Delph admits it’s been a wonderful campaign so far and puts City’s form down to the team spirit that has developed since the summer.

“It’s been a fantastic season so far,” he said.

“Towards the end of last season, we were kind of getting to grips with what the manager wanted.

“We freshened the squad up, brought in new faces and one of the biggest reasons we’re flying this season is because we’ve gelled so well. Everyone gets on.

“The age gaps are not so big. We’ve got experienced players, up-and-coming players and players in the middle. Everybody gets on well.

“The season’s been fantastic so far but I think at the end of the season there’ll be an opportunity to sit down and talk about it then.

“Maybe we’ve won all the trophies, maybe we’ve not, but the time to sit back and look at it is when the season’s finished. Whereas right now, our main focus is the next game.”
