7Lightning Leroy

“Leroy, oh Leroy Sane, run down the wing for me!”

And in a Heartbeat, he’s away…

With sublime skill and pace to burn, Leroy Sane has a need for speed – and he lit up the Premier League in the 2017/18 campaign.

Racking up 14 goals and 19 assists in all competitions – just one behind Playmaker of the Year Kevin De Bruyne in the Premier League charts – the German winger has become a key component in Pep Guardiola’s swash-buckling side.

Able to switch gear in a split second, Sane has left defenders for dead – and his unique method of striking the ball has heralded some sensational goals.

In October 2017, it was his speed that hit the headlines, as the midfielder smashed another record to become the Premier League’s fastest player.

Clocked at 35.48 kilometres per hour (22.05 mph), Sane leapfrogged Leicester’s Jamie Vardy, who had held the record since the league began monitoring speed in 2014.

The news apparently came as a surprise to Kyle Walker (ranked fifth in the list) who believes he is faster than his German team-mate.

Race needed!

8Silky Ilkay

Backheeled brilliance!

Ilkay Gundogan’s silky skills are no secret – and they were on display for all to see (and savour) when Burnley visited the Etihad Stadium in the FA Cup.

City had trailed at the break, courtesy of Ashley Barnes’ strike, but produced a sensational second half performance to blow the Clarets away.

Sergio Aguero bagged the leveller just before the hour mark and his second a minute later was a joy to behold – thanks to the creative genius of Gundogan.

Receiving Kun’s pass on the edge of the area, the German spotted the Argentine’s run and flicked a sumptuous back-heeled through-ball into the striker’s path.

Aguero collected and calmly rounded Nick Pope before slotting home to turn the game on its head.

It was a gloriously-crafted goal, created by two moments of individual artistry combined.

The quickfire double swung the pendulum in City’s favour and the Blues went on to bag two more through Sane and Bernardo Silva to book their place in the next round in style.

They don’t call him ‘silky Ilkay’ for nothing!
