There were mixed emotions for City players as France defeated Argentina 4-3 in a World Cup thriller in Kazan.

Les Bleus defender Benjamin Mendy was ruled out of this match with injury but he will now be pushing for a quarter-final spot, with Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero on their way home - despite Aguero’s late headed goal.

France went ahead early through Antoine Griezmann’s calm penalty after Marcos Rojo had felled jet-heeled forward Kylian Mbappe.

France were firmly on top at that point, with City defender Otamendi putting in an immense effort to help keep his side in the match.

That resilience was followed by brilliance when Angel di Maria unleashed a rocket of a shot from 30 yards to make it 1-1.

And shortly after the restart Argentina were ahead when Lionel Messi’s shot on the turn deflected in off Gabriel Mercado.

However, three goals in quick succession via Benjamin Pavard’s fine volley and Mbappe’s brace put France in control.

Aguero came off the bench in the second-half for the Albiceleste and headed home an excellent goal in added time, but it was too late to make a difference.

In the evening match, Bernardo Silva played the full game but Portugal’s tournament came to an end as Uruguay defeated them 2-1.
