Super Saturday beckons in the last 16

The lineup for the last-16 at this summer's World Cup is now confirmed after another dramatic day in Russia.

Belgium topped Group G after a narrow win over England courtesy of Adnan Januzaj’s brilliant winner.

Vincent Kompany played the final 15 minutes on his return from injury and looked comfortable, but John Stones, starting his third game of the tournament, came off at half-time as a precaution after he picked up a calf problem.

Japan became the first side ever to reach the knock-out phase by virtue of the fair play ruling, despite losing to bottom-placed Poland. They finished level with Senegal on points, goal difference and goals scored in Group H but collected fewer yellow cards than the African side.

Colombia’s 1-0 win over Senegal means they finish top.

Belgium will play Japan in the last-16 in Rostov on Monday, and England face Colombia on Tuesday.

Friday sees the first rest day since the tournament began over two weeks ago but the action returns in some style on Saturday with two outstanding last-16 ties.

France play Argentina in Kazan in the 3pm kick-off. Benjamin Mendy, who was a second-half substitute in France’s final group game against Denmark, will be hoping he makes his first start of the tournament, and Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Otamendi could be involved for the South Americans, who are looking to put their stuttering form behind them.

And the evening game sees Uruguay, superb in the group phase, take on Portugal in Sochi.
