The mosaic, designed by local artist and City fan Mark Kennedy, is situated on the walkway towards one of the academy pitches and depicts Yaya’s celebration after scoring the winning goal in the 2011 FA Cup final that ended the Club’s 35-year wait for silverware.
It is hoped the plaque will be a source of inspiration to our young players who use the pitch as part of their development.
Al Mubarak said: “Yaya Toure is a very special footballer and the importance of his contribution to Manchester City Football Club is indisputable.
“He had a positive impact from the moment he signed with us in the Summer of 2010, driving the team forward with his unique blend of talent, strength and style.
“The word “legend” can often be misapplied, but in describing Yaya’s status as a City player there is no more appropriate a term. I know that I join every City fan in thanking him for everything he has given to this Club and wish him all the very best for the next stage of his career.”
Toure will leave City in the summer having won three Premier League titles, three League Cups and an FA Cup.
In total he has scored 82 goals for City, including winners in the 2011 FA Cup semi-final and final, two goals at Newcastle in the penultimate match of the 2011-12 season as we closed in on our first title in 44 years and a quite brilliant 35-yard effort against Sunderland in the 2014 League Cup final.
There is no doubt he is one of the Club’s greatest-ever players and everyone at City would like to congratulate him on receiving this honour.
