Ninety-two teams will compete for the chance to play in the final at Wembley Stadium in March, and 13 Premier League sides will take part in the second round this week.
But City, as well as the six other teams competing in European competition this season, won’t be involved until the third round.

When and where does the draw take place?
We’ll discover our third round fate on Wednesday 28 August, following this week’s final fixture of Lincoln City v Everton.
The draw will take place live at Lincoln’s Sincil Bank stadium.
What time does it take place?
In the event of a tie, all matches will go straight to penalties. This means you can expect the Cup draw to take place at around 10pm.

Key dates
Round two: Week commencing Monday 26 August.
Round three (City enter): Week commencing Monday 23 September.
Round four: Week commencing Monday 28 October.
Quarter-finals: Week commencing Monday 16 December.
Semi-finals: Week commencing Monday 6 January (first leg) and Monday, 27 January (second leg).
Final: Sunday 1 March.
Rules reminder
Ahead of the 2018/19 competition, EFL clubs voted on a number of rule changes for the competition.
No extra time
Aside from the final - which will have a total of 30 minutes extra time if required - all fixtures will go straight to penalties if they result in a draw after 90 minutes. This means that the traditional away goal rule has been abolished.
The EFL says removing an additional 30 minutes will “directly address any additional fatigue issues,” because sides also have to play a league fixture in the same week.
Seeding
Seeding was removed from the initial two rounds of the Carabao Cup.
Bookings
Five bookings in all domestic competitions used to result in a one-match ban. Now, the ruling has been amended to exclude League Cup cautions, which will only be relevant to that competition.
