Pep Guardiola has rung the changes for this evening’s return to Premier League action at home to Leicester, making eight alterations from the side that won at Oxford in midweek.

Only Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva keep their place from the side that won at the Kassam Stadium, with Ederson, Kyle Walker, Fernandinho, Benjamin Mendy, Nicolas Otamendi, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus all coming in.

Sergio Aguero is named on the bench after recovering from the thigh strain that has side-lined him for almost a month.

David Silva and John Stones aren’t fully fit and haven’t been risked.

City team

XI: Ederson, Walker, Fernandinho, Otamendi, Mendy, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Mahrez, Sterling, Jesus

SUBS: Bravo, Aguero, Zinchenko, Rodrigo, Cancelo, Foden, Garcia

Leicester team

XI: Schmeichel, Ricardo, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell, Ndidi, Tielemans, Maddison, Barnes, Perez, Vardy

City tactics

4-3-3 as ever for City, with Guardiola steadfast in his football ideology.

Ederson is protected by a back four. Fernandinho and Otamendi are paired together at centre-half, with Walker and Mendy offering an attacking threat down the flanks.

Gundogan plays in the holding role today, with Rodri on the bench. De Bruyne and Bernardo will operate just ahead of him.

And Sterling and Mahrez will play in support of Gabriel Jesus, who leads the line.

Leicester, of course, pose a significant threat. Jamie Vardy is the league’s top scorer so far this season, and his pace in behind will provide them with an outlet all afternoon. He likes to play on the shoulder of defenders and his movement causes serious problems. He needs containing.

But under Brendan Rodgers, they are no longer just a counter-attacking outfit who rely on Vardy’s pace - they have quality and power in every area. It should be a fantastic occasion.

Stats

Head-to-head

Manchester City have won four of the past five Premier League meetings.

Vincent Kompany’s final goal for Manchester City was enough to win the most recent encounter in May but Leicester won when the teams met last December.

Manchester City

Manchester City had lost just once after 17 games in 2018-19 but have suffered four defeats so far in this league campaign.

They haven’t lost consecutive home league games since February 2016 under Manuel Pellegrini.

Pep Guardiola has never lost back-to-back top-flight home fixtures as a manager.

Kevin De Bruyne has nine assists in this season’s Premier League, more than any other player. He’s been involved in 15 goals, second only to Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.

De Bruyne has been directly involved in 19 goals in the Premier League in 2019 (seven goals and 12 assists), the most of any midfielder this year.

Sergio Aguero has scored five goals in his five home Premier League games against Leicester, with four of those goals coming in one half - when Manchester City won 5-1 in February 2018.
