Manchester City face Liverpool in the 2019 Community Shield this weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s side return to Wembley Stadium on Sunday looking to secure back to back victories in English football’s annual curtain raiser.

With City having been crowned Premier League and FA Cup winners in 2018, Liverpool contest the tie by virtue of being runners-up in the league.

Ahead of the game, we’ve taken a look back at our record and previous performances in this fixture…

Number of appearances

This will be the 12th time we have featured in the Community Shield, which sees us move into fifth place in the all-time rankings.

Winning record

We have won in five of our 11 games in the tie, which is the sixth highest number of victories a club has recorded in the competition.

Goals

Our goal difference stands at 0, having scored and conceded 17 times.

Francis Lee, with three goals to his name, is our highest scored in the Community Shield.

Winning years

1937

A 2-0 victory over Sunderland saw City lift the trophy for the first time.

Playing as the reigning league champions, City hosted the game at Maine Road, with Peter Doherty and Alec Herd on target for Wilf Wild’s side.

1968

An emphatic 6-1 win over West Bromwich Albion secured our second victory in the competition.

Again, the Division One holders were playing at Maine Road and it was a champions performance, which saw Bobby Owen and Lee hit a brace, with Neil Young and a Baggies’ own goal completing the scoring.

1972

Our third Community Shield victory – then named the Charity Shield – saw us beat Aston Villa 1-0.

Lee won the game with a penalty, though this was not the customary clash between the Division One champions and FA Cup winners.

Leeds United and Derby County had declined to play, but the invitation was accepted by City, who finished fourth in the league and Villa, who were the Division Three title winners.

2012

Having won the 2012 Premier League title in the most dramatic of circumstances, Roberto Mancini’s started the following season a 3-2 Community Shield win over Chelsea.

City trailed to Fernando Torres’ opener, but hit back with three goals in 12 minutes from Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri, before Ryan Bertrand’s late consolation.

Though it was now traditional for Wembley Stadium to host the contest, this game was played at Villa Park to avoid clashing with that summer’s London Olympics.

2018

A man of the match performance from Sergio Aguero, who scored a goal in each half, enabled Guardiola’s team to claim the first of last season’s four trophies, with another win over Chelsea.

Losing years

1934

City’s first Community Shield appearance ended in a 4-0 defeat to an Arsenal side led by the Gunners’ legendary manager, Herbert Chapman.

1956

City were without ‘keeper Bert Trautmann, who famously completed the final 17 minutes of the previous season’s FA Cup final victory with a broken neck.

A Dennis Voillet goal was enough to give Manchester United victory.

1969

Colin Bell scored a 90th minute consolation as Joe Mercer’s FA Cup winners lost 2-1 to Leeds United, who had Eddie Gray and Jack Charlton on the score sheet.

1973

Colin Waldron’s strike consigned City to defeat against Burnley in the third Community Shield in which neither the league champions nor FA Cup winners played.

City took part as the holders of the Shield and the Clarets as Division Two champions.

2011

City surrendered a 2-0 half-time lead to United at Wembley.

Mancini’s men were ahead thanks to a Joleon Lescott header and Edin Dzeko’s strike from distance but the Reds levelled through Chris Smalling and Nani, before the Portuguese winger hit a stoppage time winner.

2014

City’s most recent defeat came at the hands of Arsenal, who won 3-0 thanks to goals from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud.

Willy Caballero and Fernando made their debuts that day, while current Assistant Coach, Mikel Arteta, captained the Gunners.
