New signing Rodri has spoken of his delight at working with Pep Guardiola.

The midfielder joined City a fortnight ago from Atletico Madrid, where he played for one season and made a huge impression in La Liga.

The 23-year-old made his unofficial debut on Wednesday in Nanjing, playing just in front of the back four as City beat West Ham 4-1 in our pre-season opener.

He says working under Guardiola was a big factor in his move – and praised his new boss for having an immediate impact on his game.

“For me, it’s an incredible experience to spend a year with Simeone and now Pep,” Rodri said. “Let’s see how I can learn.

“You take a look back and see what he won, and you want to win the same things. I need to look at what he says and teaches me - that’s why I came here.

“He has already told me what I have to do with the ball, how can I find my teammates, many things. I cannot explain now but you will see over the season. I will adapt to this team.

“We don’t talk much after the game but before he told me what i have to do on the pitch, how I focus on defensive and offensive side.

“It’s not easy, I have to adapt my way of playing to the team. With the matches, I will get more confident, more used to passing to my partners. It’s good he tells me things. It’s good news.”

City face Wolves on Saturday in the final of the Premier League Asia Cup, as preparations for the new season step up a level.

Rodri looks set to keep his place after an assured display against West Ham, offering him more game time as he looks to get used to his new teammates.

“You know it’s always different in another country, but I arrive at City which is very close to how I play football,” he continued.

“Always, it’s different but it’s football. We have to compete, work, run. I am young, I have lots to learn here. That’s why I have come here - to win things and grow as a player.

“It’s a dream coming here. I started one week ago, and football doesn’t stop. I am excited to start.

“We won 4-1. For me, it’s important to get the rhythm for my adaptation here. I am excited to play for Manchester City. I am really happy to be here.”
