Season’s highlight
There is a well-worn sporting cliché regarding top athletes performing in the biggest moments.
In our 2018/19 Premier League campaign it didn’t get any bigger than the January showdown with Liverpool.
And it was Leroy Sane who won us the match, with an angled left-footed drive that cannoned off the inside of the post on its way in.
It was, unquestionably, a huge moment in the title race and finished with a calmness from a player who is so exciting to watch.
That was the case again at the Etihad Stadium that evening.
Sane enjoyed an intriguing battle with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who he got the better of to score, and had the crowd on their feet on countless occasions with his trademark surging runs.
It was a good performance without the goal. With it, it was great.
Overview
Thirty-six goals and assists in 49 appearances earned Sane the PFA Young Player of the Year award in what was an impressive debut season.
A tough act to follow, then.
And though he shared his responsibilities with Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez, in addition to Raheem Sterling, the fleet-footed German was just as impactful.
He posted 34 goals and assists in 47 games in 2018/19, at a rate of one every 79 minutes.
It’s a remarkable stat made all the more impressive when you consider that Bernardo and Sterling – his rivals for a starting spot – were City’s leading lights throughout the season.
But even when asked to make his mark from the substitutes bench, Sane continued to prove how lethal he is in the final third and remains a player capable of delivering match-winning moments.
There was his exquisite free-kick seven minutes after coming on to give us a crucial lead at Schalke, whilst in the Manchester derby it took him 14 minutes to seal the points, with a fierce left-footed strike that David De Gea’s outstretched leg was powerless to stop.
Another stellar season from one of the Premier League’s best attackers.
