Season’s highlight

Nicolas Otamendi had a typically solid campaign and featured in 33 matches in all competitions.

Like John Stones, goals weren’t as easy to come by as the 2017/18 season, but of course goals from defenders are an added bonus.

Still, the one he did manage was a thumping header against Rotherham United and worthy of any highlights package.

His late appearance against Liverpool in the dying moments of the 2-1 Etihad win were also crucial as he managed a few vital clearances as the Merseysiders went for broke.

Overview

The man nicknamed ‘The General’ enjoyed another commanding season with City – his fourth with the Club.

Like John Stones and Vincent Kompany, Otamendi had to share defensive responsibilities throughout the Fourmidables campaign, yet still clocked up an impressive 33 appearances along the way.

Yet whenever he played, he was committed, aggressive and composed.

Also, like Stones, the goals didn’t come for the Argentinian in 2018/19, with just one in the FA Cup tie with Rotherham.

But Otamendi contributed in so many other ways and continued to be a valued member of a defensive unit that is happy to play under the severest pressure.

A winner, a rock and a player who plays with controlled passion, Otamendi is something of an unsung hero for City.
