Season’s highlight

After yet another magnificent individual campaign by our all-time record goal-scorer, there are no shortage of potential pinnacles to select from.

However, Kun’s stunning back-to-back Etihad hat-tricks against Arsenal and Chelsea in early February stand apart.

City went into our fixture against Unai Emery’s side needing a collective shot in the arm following an uncharacteristic 2-1 loss at Newcastle five days earlier.

Enter Aguero.

The Argentine master marksman ensured we got off to the perfect flying start by despatching a first minute diving header past Gunners ‘keeper Bernd Leno, who was heading in the opposite direction.

Aguero then added a second on the stroke of half-time. Ilkay Gundogan spotted Raheem Sterling’s clever run into the box, lofted a deft ball into his path and the England winger’s sublime first-time cross was tapped in at the far post by Aguero.

And Kun set the seal on his 10th Premier League treble on the hour mark, the ball bundling in off his body after Leno pushed another teasing Sterling cross into his path

Not content with that superb treble against the Gunners, Aguero went out and repeated the feat against Chelsea seven days later – and if anything, this hat-trick was even better.

His first was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch. Picking up the ball in a tight area 30 yards from goal, he effortlessly avoided the attention of four defenders before smashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Aguero then took advantage of Ross Barkley’s poor attempt at a header back to Kepa, firing in a smart half-volley into the corner on the turn.

And our striker supreme set the seal on a dazzling 6-0 win via a second half penalty to record his 11th Premier League hat-trick – drawing him level with all-time record holder Alan Shearer – and 15th in total for the Club.

Overview

One almost runs out of superlatives in trying to do proper justice to Aguero’s feats and his contribution across our record-breaking 2018/19 campaign was once again colossal.

City legend Francis Lee opined last week that he believed Kun had become an even better player under the leadership of Pep Guardiola and it’s hard to argue with Franny’s assessment.

He arguably remains English football’s pre-eminent marksman in and around the box, but there is so much more to Aguero’s game now with his work-rate, aggression and tactical acumen only adding to his collective armoury.

In total, Sergio claimed 21 Premier League goals – the fifth successive season he has scored 20 or more in a league campaign – and that remarkable feat was recognised by his peers who voted him into the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

In total, Aguero scored 32 goal across our whole campaign and he was one of the key drivers in City’s historic season which saw the Club create English history by claiming the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield.

Already assured of his place in the pantheon of all-time City greats, Aguero continues to re-write the record books so much so there’s no telling how many goals he will eventually end up with.
