Aidy Boothroyd’s side were beaten 4-2 by Romania in a breathless encounter that exploded to life in the final 20 minutes.
City’s Phil Foden started on the bench and was introduced on 57 minutes, but had few opportunities to make an impact on the match.
England were constantly chasing the game after Romania took the lead on 76 minutes.
Though Demerari Gray leveled on 79,,Romania regained the lead through Ianis Hagi five minutes later.
And though Tammy Abraham made it 2-2 immediately after, Romania still had time to score twice more in the time that remained to make it six goals in total in -the final 17 minutes.
Foden had little opportunity to prove his worth in a frantic finish, and England need a highly unlikely set of results to occur to have even a slight chance of making the semis.
