Former Manchester City winger Martin Petrov has revealed his admiration for Leroy Sane.

The Bulgarian, who starred for City between 2008-11, made 73 appearances for the Club, scoring 12 goals.

And he has been impressed with what he’s seen from 21-year-old Sane, who won the PFA Young Player of the Year award last season as the Blues swept to the Premier League title.

“I don’t know who is faster, him or me!” the former winger joked. “He is a great player.Petrov was signed in the summer of 2007 as Sven-Goran Eriksson assembled a new-look and much-improved squad.

It was a memorable period for the Blues, with Eriksson’s signings revolutionising the team’s style of play after a period of stagnation under Stuart Pearce.

Petrov looks back on that season fondly, describing Eriksson as a fine coach committed to attacking football.

“He’s just a good, smiley man”, Petrov said of his former boss, “He just enjoyed going forward, playing good football – not too much defensively.

“He always said when you go out to the pitch: ‘guys, just enjoy the game’… for me he’s one of the best coaches in the world.”
