The Belgian skipper unleashed a 30-yard pile-driver against the Foxes that settled the game and ensured City’s title hopes remained intact, but supporters on social media have been debating whether it was the best goal by a City defender or not.

So, with that in mind – and in no particular order - here are some suggestions for other cracking goals from those who’s job is usually to prevent them going in at the opposite end…
August 2003: Michael Tarnat v Blackburn Rovers
When Kevin Keegan’s City won a free-kick 35 yards from the Blackburn Rovers goal, former Bayern Munich Michael Tarnat placed the ball down and stepped back.
Rovers put a half-hearted two-man wall up, but Tarnat was so far out, it didn’t seem to matter.
He ran up, struck a ferocious shot with his left foot that swerved away from goalkeeper Brad Friedel and the American got a hand to the ball but couldn’t stop it going into the back of the net to give the Blues a fourth-minute lead.
City went on to win 3-2 at Ewood Park.
November 1998: Andy Morrison v Oldham Athletic
City had opened up a 2-0 first-half lead at Boundary Park courtesy of a Kevin Horlock brace and were well on the way to victory.
But that wasn’t the end of the scoring and the best was yet to come.
With 69 minutes on the clock, the ball was chipped to the edge of the Oldham box where Shun Goater cushioned the ball towards new centre-back Andy Morrison who immediately let fly with a sweet right-foot volley from 20 yards that gave the keeper no chance.
It was his second goal in two games having signed on loan from Huddersfield Town, but his move was made permanent not long after.
October 2005: Danny Mills v Everton
Danny Mills averaged a goal every 18 months during his career and he would only score once during his time with City.
But if ever there was an argument for quality over quantity, this was surely it.
The match – the earliest Premier League kick-off yet with an 11.15am Sunday start – saw City take on a struggling Everton at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Mills ran down the right before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful shot from 25 yards that gave Nigel Martyn no chance.
It was at the same end as Kompany’s goal, against a team in navy and almost on the same minute…
January 2003: Niclas Jensen v Leeds United
The thing about a sweet volley is that you know it’s going in from the minute it leaves your foot.
Anyone who has ever scored a goal like that will tell you the same and, from the second Niclas Jensen connected with Nicolas Anelka’s cross-field pass, the ball was only going to end up in one place.
The Danish left-back struck the pass full on the volley from 20 yards and the first the Leeds United goalkeeper knew about it, he was picking the ball out of the net.
March 1993: Terry Phelan v Tottenham
Terry Phelan was a fast-paced left-back who joined the Blues from Wimbledon in 1992.
A solid and dependable defender, his finest moment in sky blue came during an FA Cup quarter-final with Tottenham in 1993.
City were already trailing 4-1 and the game was in its dying embers as Phelan picked up the ball halfway in his own half before speeding past a couple of challenges, then through a cluster of three Spurs players before sliding the ball under the keeper from the edge of the Spurs box.
It didn’t save the day, but it lifted the home support on an otherwise miserable afternoon.
