Season’s highlight
On a day in which City rounded off an historic season in emphatic style, Walker achieved his own personal milestone.
Our 6-0 FA Cup final victory over Watford saw the right-back make his 100th appearance for the Club, a landmark he has reached in just under two years.
It speaks volumes of his reliability, an often-overlooked trait in players.
The 29-year-old has provided both defensive cover and an attacking threat down the right flank week in, week out and with a World Cup sandwiched in between title-winning campaigns.
His Wembley milestone and the winner’s medal that followed were just reward for a player who has performed with distinction to help City lift six trophies in two seasons.
Overview
Walker arguably saved his best form until last, producing a number of strong performances when it mattered most.
He started 27 of the final 30 games of the season and like City, came into his own during the title run-in.
He was particularly impressive in the 4-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League, which couldn’t prevent an agonising exit, when his tireless running provided a real attacking threat.
And that continued in the final few games as he helped Pep Guardiola’s side get over the line in the Premier League.
What makes this all the more impressive is that Walker lost his place in the starting XI at the turn of the year, when Guardiola turned to Danilo as his option at right-back.
It was a real mark of his professionalism and ability that he worked his way back into the side and stayed there to reinforce his status as one of England’s most dependable full-backs.
In a season of fine margins, we also shouldn’t forget what proved to be a particularly valuable contribution against Newcastle in September.
Walker was the match-winner in our 2-1 win over the Magpies, hitting a fierce drive into the bottom right corner from 30-yards.
A superb strike to give us what turned out to be crucial win.
