Vincent Kompany declared Manchester City are the best club in the world as he addressed the adoring fans at the champions trophy parade.

On an evening of celebration, the departing captain reflected with both pride and love for the Club he has represented with distinction for more than a decade.

The Belgian defender has led his team through the most successful period in City’s history and told the hordes of fans who lined the streets of Manchester he departs safe in the knowledge he gave everything to the cause.

“I want to say thank you to everyone,” he said.

“11 years at this club, what a journey we’ve been on.

“This was always a great club, even without silverware. With this team, we’ve been able to give you something that was a long time coming. Something you’ve deserved for a long time.

“The moment that ball against Leicester went top bins, I knew I was done. I couldn’t do anything better! That goal went in and it felt right.

“I’ve done everything I could. I’ve given everything I had. I have nothing left and I’m proud of that.”

Both the men and women’s teams had already taken to the stage at Manchester Cathedral when Kompany was given the honour of walking out alone to be greeted by the roar of the crowd.

The honorary Mancunian will be back for a testimonial in September, with proceeds being used to tackle homelessness in his adopted city.

It will be a special occasion for a special player, who hopes it will be a celebration of the players he feels fortunate to have called team-mates.

“You know how much this city kept me alive,” he declared.

“People respect you going down and coming back every single time. I hope that I’ll get to see everyone again at the testimonial.

“I want it to be a celebration of ten years of wonderful players. I couldn’t have achieved anything without them.

“Whether we win or lose, we always celebrate. That’s City.

“You are the best club in the world. I don’t care if you win the Champions League or not. Remember it forever.

“These guys deserve all your love. Every day of the week, every year. This is the way I want to leave.

“Thank you. I love you. I’m out.”
