Pep Guardiola’s men were held to a draw by Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk at the Etihad Stadium in matchday five of the group stage but we still secured top spot and qualification for the last 16 of the tournament.
After a morale-boosting Premier League victory over Chelsea last weekend, we came into the clash with Shakhtar full of confidence but the visitors were well organised and defended rigidly. Early in the second half, Ilkay Gundogan put us in front, but substitute Manor Solomon netted a shock equaliser.
The group has been extremely entertaining thus far, with City starting with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Shakhtar in Ukraine.
We followed that up with a routine 2-0 win under the floodlights at the Etihad over Dinamo Zagreb and really took command of the group by blowing Atalanta away 5-1.
The return fixture in Italy was less than comfortable, but we fought hard to come away with a point and have now sealed progression with another draw.
The Blues round off this season’s group stage campaign away to Zagreb on 11 December and will hope to keep our unbeaten record in the competition intact.
