City’s bid for a third-successive Carabao Cup success continued with a 3-1 win over Southampton on Tuesday. It’s now more than three years since our last defeat in the competition. Club journalist Rob

Wednesday 26 October 2016. Not a particularly remarkable day politically or culturally, but it marks the last time Manchester City suffered a defeat in the League Cup.

It came at Old Trafford, as a young side lost 1-0 to Manchester United in the fourth round of the competition. It was early in Pep Guardiola’s first season as City manager and his ideas were yet to seep into the squad.

Fast-forward 1,099 days and City haven’t lost since. We won the competition in 2018, a springboard to winning the Premier League with 100 points, and then repeated the feat 12 months later as we became the first side in history to win all four major English honours.

And we are now in the quarter-finals for the third year in succession, having beaten Preston 3-0 and Southampton 3-1

In total, we’ve won 14 straight games in the competitions, albeit four of them on penalties after those matches finishes in a draw. We’ve scored 33 goals in the process, conceding just seven.

If we were to taste success this season, it would be the seventh time in the Club’s history we have won it and our fifth in seven years.

The way City have set about this year’s campaign, who would bet against us making it a hat-trick in the first weekend of March?
