The Brazilian keeper, a notoriously calm character even in the most pressurised of circumstances, remains positive about City’s title chances despite conceding early ground to last season’s runners-up.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s sides were the runaway top two in 2018/19, with City clawing back a seven-point margin to clinch the title, which is why Ederson is refusing to be too downhearted after last weekend’s defeat to Norwich City.
“There are many games still to play in the league,” he said.
“It has just started. A lot of things can still happen, just as they did last season.
“Five points is a good distance to have at the beginning of the season, but we have to chase to close the deficit.
“Hopefully we can start that against Watford.”
City go into Saturday’s game against the Hornets bolstered by a 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday and it was a game which we dominated throughout.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a quiet evening, but was typically reliable when called into action and he admits the victory and performance were a welcome boost after the defeat at Carrow Road.
That loss, however, was a reminder of how tricky it can be to navigate the Premier League.
Ahead of Watford’s visit Guardiola reiterated that his side never take winning for granted, despite their fine record over the past two seasons.
“We know before every game we can lose,” said the boss at his pre-match press conference and his goalkeeper echoed this sentiment.
“Every Premier League game is important,” added Ederson.
“Of course, we can’t always guarantee we’ll win.
“Unfortunately, in the last game we ended up losing, but I think our team is well prepared.
“We’ve shown it against Shakhtar and I hope we can continue maintain that momentum against Watford.”
