The new deal means the Brazilian will remain at the Club until the summer of 2021, by which time he will have spent eight seasons at City.
He’s enjoyed a glittering spell at the Etihad, winning three Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups, making 299 appearances in all competitions.
And he says he is now determined to ensure our success continues during his time here.
“This is the best possible news,” he said. “I want to take this opportunity to put on record how grateful I am to my teammates and the backroom staff here at City. Without them, this deal would not be possible, so sincere thanks to every single one of them.
“I have enjoyed every second of my time here. I never expected to build such a meaningful relationship with the Club and the fans, but it has happened, and I am grateful every single day.
“Our fans are unbelievable; I am so happy that I will continue to play for them a year longer. I feel their love and passion and it genuinely helps keep me driven.
“My focus now is on making sure we continue to be successful. My time here has been decorated by silverware, but under Pep’s guidance we have really accelerated. I want that to carry on for as long as possible.”
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “This new deal reflects Fernandinho’s quality and commitment. He is not only a first-class professional and one of the best players in world football, he is a fantastic person who leads by example every single day.
“We have a talented young squad – but making sure they are supplemented by senior players of Fernandinho’s ilk is of paramount importance. What he brings in terms of leadership and professionalism is valued by everyone at the football club.
“He is a player with outstanding technical quality, and his appreciation of the game allows him to play multiple positions. He is also a player without ego, someone who values his teammates and recognises the importance of the squad.”
Fernandinho joined City in the summer of 2013 and has proven to be one of our best-ever signings.
With Manuel Pellegrini newly installed as manager, Fernandinho was part of a recruitment drive aimed at giving City more energy and dynamism.
And his first season left fans in no doubt we had one of the game’s most complete midfielders on our books. We won the Premier League title and Carabao Cup, scoring 156 in all competitions, a then-record in English football but one we have since broken, with Fernandinho outstanding throughout the campaign.
He scored in our 2016 League Cup final win over Liverpool and was a key player during our run to the Champions League semi-finals that same year.
And since Pep Guardiola’s arrival, he has gone from strength to strength, establishing a reputation as one of the most effective midfielders in the game, as well as proving adept at centre-half.
He played 48 times during our Centurions season and then 42 times during our Fourmidables campaign that saw us become the first men’s team in English football history to win all four domestic trophies.
Without his discipline and protection of the back four, that success would not have been possible.
In total, he has played 299 games for the Club, scoring 23 goals.
Everyone at City would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Fernandinho on his extension and we all wish him well during the remainder of his time here.
Fernandinho facts
The Brazilian has a tactics board at home, which he uses to share ideas with his friends and also his nine-year-old son, Davi, who has trained with City’s academy.
Fernandinho cites versatile compatriot Ze Roberto – of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen fame – as one of his inspirations. That’s due to the former midfielder’s longevity, playing until he was 43 and the number of different positions he played in.
Of the current City squad, no player has made more tackles for the Club in the Premier League than Fernandinho.
In his 14-year senior club career, the 34-year-old has won 22 trophies. This includes nine league titles at Shakhtar Donetsk and City.
He can speak Portuguese, Russian, Italian Spanish and English.
Both Spurs and Chelsea tried to sign him from Shakhtar Donetsk, before he moved to City in the summer of 2013.
He is born in Londrina, the former British settlement of Little London but moved to the state capital of Curitiba at the age of 17 in order to sign for Atletico Paranaense.
